Diazepam
(di-az´ĕ-pam) a benzodiazepine used as an antianxiety agent, sedative, antipanic agent, antitremor agent, skeletal muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and in the management of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Diazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative drug. It is commonly used for treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures, muscle spasms, restless legs syndrome, alcohol withdrawal, benzodiazepine withdrawal, and Ménière’s disease. It may also be used before certain medical procedures (such as endoscopies) to reduce tension and anxiety, and in some surgical procedures to induce amnesia. It possesses anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative, skeletal muscle relaxant, and amnestic properties.
Side Effects: Drowsiness, suppression of REM sleep, impaired motor function, impaired coordination, impaired balance, dizziness and nausea, depression, impaired learning, anterograde amnesia [1] (especially pronounced in higher doses), cognitive deficits, reflex tachycardia [2].
Less common paradoxical side-effects can include nervousness, irritability, insomnia, muscle cramps, changes in libido (increased or decreased libido) and in some cases, rage, and violence. Diazepam may increase, in some people, the propensity toward self-harming behaviors and, in extreme cases, may provoke suicidal tendencies or acts. If these side-effects are present, diazepam treatment should be immediately terminated.
Diazepam (aka Valium): One 10mg. tablet administered at 1:30 a.m.
