The Drugs

Murray told investigators that he administered 50 mg. of propofol to Michael Jackson every night for 6 weeks to help him sleep.  On June 22, 2009, fearing the artist was developing an addiction, he says he cut that dosage in half but added lorazepam (Ativan) and midazolam (Versed) to the recipe, after which Michael Jackson was able to sleep.  On June 23, 2009, Murray completely eliminated the propofol and Michael was able to sleep with only the Ativan and Versed.  On June 25, 2009, Murray mixed one final cocktail:

  • 1:30 a.m.: 10 mg. tablet of diazepam (Valium)
  • 2:00 a.m.: 2 mg. lorazepam (Ativan), “pushed slowly into his IV”
  • 3:00 a.m.: 2 mg. midazolam (Versed), also pushed “slowly into his IV”
  • 5:00 a.m.: another 2 mg. lorazepam, again pushed “slowly into his IV”
  • 7:30 a.m.: another 2 mg. midazolam, pushed “slowly into his IV”
  • 10:40 a.m.: 25 mg. propofol

Murray claimed to have been monitoring Michael Jackson through a “pulse oximeter” connected to his finger.  He also claims to have stayed at his side for ten minutes after administering the propofol, until he left the room to relieve himself and was gone no longer than 2 minutes.

If we accept Murray’s account of the events, we are to believe that he was continuously at Michael Jackson’s side for 9 hours and 20 minutes trying to help the man sleep.  It seems reasonable that after that length of time Murray might need to use the restroom.  What doesn’t seem reasonable is that any doctor in their right mind wouldn’t have used the restroom BEFORE administering a drug that requires constant and vigilant observation.  Also unreasonable and highly unlikely is that after spending 560 minutes continuously at his side, Michael Jackson succumbed to acute propofol intoxication during the 2 minutes that Murray chose to use the restroom.

It just doesn’t add up.  Any of it.
